When my e36 is in neutral with the clutch engaged it makes a slight grumbling. Push the clutch in and select a gear and it stops. No weird noises (other than the failing power steering and rattly exhaust) while driving either. Not overly bothered because ill probably put some miles on it while I get my life in order, then engine swap it anyway. E46 323i are cheap here, sell some parts and I can get a low mile 2.5 i6 for less than £200.

throwout bearing?

Similar noise, but if I push the clutch in, no noise. Thats when youd expect throwout bearing grumble.

Slight grumbling? Sounds like your E36 is an old man. You should probably get off its lawn.

Worn bearings on the axle into the gearbox. it spins while in neutral with clutch engaged, you clutch out it’ll release the axle, putting into gear will also stop it from the engagement. My dad’s escort ran with a bad whirr, almost like straight-cut gears, but never got worse or showed any signs of failing for the few years he had it.

That helps explain the incontinence too.

Thanks for the explanation. Should last plenty long enough then.

Hmm, worn synchros maybe? Though I think that would mean you would hear it in atleast some gears too, though maybe it is just not audible due to other noises?

That’s just my slightly educated guess though, so I could be wrong.

How are you doing btw?

I have nothing to add except my S10 makes the same noise under the same circumstances and I haven’t noticed anything weird about the way it operates so I’m choosing not to worry about it.

Think echo may be onto something with it. A layshaft spins when the car is in neutral and the bearing can wear out. (Totally just looked that up). Im an okay DIY mechanic, but gearboxes are magic to me.

Yeah im not concerned, it still drives pretty well. Just curious mostly.

My best wishes!

And do still have the Twingo? I was a bit confused there as to why you bought the Compact in the first place besides it being cheap and a potentially easy flip.

Throwout bearing.

Mmmmm engine swap. I actually dreamed of a 6-cylinder E46 Compact last night. Oh man

That’s pretty normal. I think it’s caused by the throwout bearing “dragging” when the clutch is engaged. When you push the clutch pedal the noise disappears because the bearing is now pushed in and spinning (unless the bearing is bad, then it makes even more noise).

I actually found a 90k mile e46 323i saloon yesterday for like £550. Clean interior to sell and scrap the shell (it had rust) then put that 2.5 engine in the e36. Thats the plan at least, to find something similar when I have the time.

Thanks man.

Yeah the Twingo still gets driven a lot. I bought the e36 because I liked it and wanted to own one. Originally i was going to flip it for a tiny profit, then ultimately kept it.

Yeah, they’ve got a lot going on in quite a small area.

One of the bearings was my next guess too. So I hope it’s just that.

Fuuuuu... all E46s with 6 cylinders either have really high mileage, beaten to hell and back and/or both. The good examples are still our there though, unlike E30s and E36s.

Probably nothing major. Even if it is i have no money in the car and plans to swap the drivetrain anyway.

I get your decision. Ultimately your own well being and that of your loved ones will always be more important than a job.

Are you plannig to look for a job more fitting to your education closer to home, or are you going to keep doing your old job for a while?

In the UK big petrol engined cars are worth pennies and usually out of reach of the chavs that hoon them. So there are bargains to be found.

Havent 100% decided yet. I have a good chance of reaching management in retail so thats an option. Id love to be in the automotive sector but competition for jobs is nuts here.

Insurance for young chaps is probably very high for everywhere, even moreso for high displacement/output cars. I still regularly see some 20 something driving CL600s and other big cars. (They probably live with their mums)

You’ve got the benefit that you can keep the retail job with some perspective on a higher function, so in case you can’t find a job jn the automotive sector you still have something.

Are there so little jobs in the automotive sector up north? Or is it just that there are too many engineers?

I’m always told that the UK has lots of automotive engineering going on, though it is possible that my sources forget to mention that mostly being in the south.

There are jobs in the North but theyre largely Nissan and their suppliers. Theres just too many qualified people making the competition very high. Many people with good degrees here end up just taking what they can get. Hell with this job i wanted automotive, i ended up doing office work for a housebuilder...

That’s a pitty.

In the somewhat unlikely case that I hear some company is looking for a mechanical engineer in the north, I will refer them to you. But you never know, such a situation might occur, since I’m going into the automotive sector soon-ish.

Totally thrust/throwout bearing, or so I’ve been told. My last few cars have done it.
